Welcome to the University of Washington Multicultural Greek Council! My name is Emily and I am proud to introduce to you our community!
MGC was established in 2002 to unify a diverse number of historically underrepresented groups and chapters on the University of Washington, Seattle campus. Our community is home to 11 multicultural Greek organizations at the University of Washington (and still growing!) Each house is individually unique, defined by their own distinct energies, but share the values of academic excellence, providing resources to network and establish strong community relations, and increasing cultural awareness.
I joined MGC as a proud sister of Chi Sigma Alpha National Sorority, Inc. in the Fall of 2019. Since joining this community, I have grown to be a more confident, compassionate, and resilient person than I was 2 years ago. Coming out of high school, I was searching for a new start and a new community that would allow me to reflect on my individuality and strive to live my best life as my authentic self. For me and others alike, MGC has served as a safe space for us to venture out of our comfort zones, make mistakes without fear of judgment, and uplift ourselves as adults and unique individuals emerging into society.
Our community strives to empower our members by emphasizing inclusivity and providing the opportunities, connections, platforms, and mentorship needed to amplify BIPOC voices, foster leadership, and embody excellence. I am proud to say that our members are involved and proactive in not just their personal lives and academics, but also in social justice initiatives, such as Black Lives Matter, Stop Asian Hate, and Mutual Aid. While our community strives to be our best selves in higher education and beyond, we also strive to be more educated in order to create a more just and compassionate environment for future generations.
Our council is young and still has ways to go in terms of establishing and upholding standards for accountability and excellence. In MGC, we are aware that while traditional Greek Life has evolved to become more inclusive, it is initially a space built on the exclusion of certain groups of people. Following the path that the National Panhellenic Council paved, MGC was created as a more relatable space for students of all identities to experience Greek Life and become empowered in their identities in a more diverse and inclusive environment. As president, my goal is to preserve this inclusive space for personal development and growth. I hope to continue building on and improving the foundation set by previous councils in order to better establish MGC in Greek Life.
I hope that this message has provided you with new awareness of our community, and perhaps even inspired you to get to know us better and join our family.
We look forward to meeting you soon and I hope that MGC can be the place for you to grow as a Husky and as an individual.

ABOUT MULTICULTURAL GREEK COUNCIL
Established in 2002, the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) aims to unify historically underrepresented chapters on the UW Seattle campus and continues to do so today. In the years since the establishment of the council, MGC is now home to 11 active Greek organizations that span across Asian, Latinx, and progressive interests. Built upon the three pillars of Community, Culture, and Academics, members of MGC continually display qualities symbolic of these, while representing the excellence of their respective chapters. As the council expands in size, the Multicultural Greek Council will continue to provide a safe and inclusive space for the expression of diverse opinions and meaningful social relationships. Greek life at UW is made up of four Greek Councils: Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Association, National Panhellenic Association, and Multicultural Greek Council (MGC). Unlike traditional IFC or Panhellenic fraternities and sororities that mandate their membership to reside in furnished houses on Greek Row, MGC’s relatively young status at the University of Washington justifies why many chapters do not have permanent residences. Yet, through numerous social calendar events throughout the year, MGC organizations strive to promote an active campus presence while demonstrating the power of unity among multicultural Greeks with the wider Greek and UW community.
The Multicultural Greek Council strives to provide all of our members with a home-away-from-home. Through this, despite our diverse cultural backgrounds, the United Greek Council promotes a message of unity amongst our campus, while creating endless bonds between our organizations.
Through the celebration and promotion of cultures, the Multicultural Greek Council prides itself over the cultural pride that our members possess. Our council provides the support and resources that each organization needs in order to spread more cultural awareness on campus, while embracing the individuality of each individual.
The Multicultural Greek Council is composed of highly motivated students with countless dreams and passions that inspire the motivation to succeed. With this environment, each member of our council has the resources and support to aspire to reach beyond these goals and build a platform of networking and communication.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The Multicultural Greek Council is dedicated to promoting unity among minority Greek organizations at the University of Washington. We aim to provide a united governing body for these underrepresented cultural organizations on campus. MGC offers opportunities to build community relations, gain cultural awareness, and promote academic success.
